Female job seekers, including those looking for London jobs , are benefiting from current labour market demands, it has been claimed. According to John Philpott, chief economist at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, there was a quarterly increase in part-time employment for women for the three months ending in August. Mr Philpott suggested that this rise is due to a upturn in part-time employment and temporary jobs, which are often given to female workers. He commented: "Women are the main beneficiaries of a labour market where part-time work is rising while full-time jobs continue to be cut." The expert went on to say that the CIPD predicts the rate of male unemployment will exceed ten per cent in 2010.

Grunge rocker Courtney Love has told friends she is down to her last £75 and set to be kicked on to the streets . The widow of the legendary Kurt Cobain, 45, said she could not even afford to feed her daughter Frances Bean, 17. Love, who is living in New York's Mercer Hotel , texted a pal saying: "I'm f****d now dude. I have 120 bucks, my kid hasn't had a decent meal and I'm getting evicted." London Underground workers are threatening to go on strike for a pay rise, according to news reports today. Staff have rejected an offer of a 1.5 per cent pay increase this year followed by an inflation plus 0.5 per cent rise in April 2010. Transport for London (TfL) condemned the threat and said their pay offer was "fair and final". The union held a 48-hour strike in June which severely affected services.

The recent decision by postal workers to strike over jobs means that poeple are being advised to post their Christmas mail three weeks early. A ballot of 120,000 Royal Mail workers voted overwhelmingly to walk out in a bitter row over jobs and pay. Union leaders will meet next week to decide the timing of the strikes, which could start by the end of the month.

David Rowe, who said he had sent out hundreds of CVs and offered to work for free, could not find himself a job . Hundreds of Police Officers may lose their jobs as Scotland Yard hurries to save £20m, the Evening Standard has reported. Plans have been announced for civilians to take the jobs of 400 uniformed custody officers , as part of a bid to save £67m in the next financial year. It is also rumoured that the Metropolitan Police force was considering cutting frontline jobs, as a last resort. Senior officers are also drawing up plans to merge departments such as HR and finance across boroughs to make further savings.

Firms will be required to advertise jobs in the UK for a month before recruiting overseas, Home Secretary Alan Johnson said on Monday, in a move to ensure British workers are "first in line" for jobs. At the moment, companies only have to advertise for two weeks in Britain before they can offer the role to a worker from outside the European Union. Starting next year, all jobs must be listed in Jobcentre Plus for four weeks, a Home Office statement said, in a bid to "ensure that British workers are not only first in line for jobs but also now have more time in which to apply".
